The Emerald Tablets of Thoth are a set of mystical writings published in the 1930s by the American occult teacher Maurice Doreal, who said he translated them from ancient tablets left by Thoth, described as an Atlantean priest-king. They are often confused with the much older Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, a short alchemical text with roots in early medieval Arabic sources. This guide explains where each text came from, what the Emerald Tablets of Thoth teach, and how to weigh the claims about their origin.
Key takeaways:
- The Emerald Tablets of Thoth were published by Maurice Doreal of Denver in the 1930s.
- Doreal said he found and translated the tablets, but no one else reported seeing them.
- The original Hermetic Emerald Tablet is a separate, much older text central to alchemy.
- The famous line “as above, so below” paraphrases the Hermetic tablet, not Doreal’s book.
I have a soft spot for both of these texts. Doreal’s book is poetic and strange and full of light. The Hermetic tablet is one of the most influential short writings in Western history. They deserve to be understood on their own terms, and that starts with untangling them.
What the Emerald Tablets of Thoth Are
The book known as The Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean contains a series of teachings written in an elevated, almost biblical style. Most editions include 13 tablets plus two supplementary ones. They are presented as the words of Thoth himself, describing his life in Atlantis, his journey to Egypt after the fall of that civilization, and the spiritual laws he wished to pass on.
The themes are cosmic. The tablets speak of the Halls of Amenti, hidden chambers deep within the earth where great beings guard the secrets of life and death. They describe the soul’s journey through cycles of incarnation, the power of light over darkness, and practices for mastering the mind and the body. Many readers find passages that feel like guided meditations.
The book has become a staple of modern esoteric reading, often recommended alongside writings on Atlantis, ancient wisdom and ascension. If you are drawn to these subjects, our article on Atlantis, hidden technology and the future of humanity explores the wider story that Doreal’s text plugs into.

Who Was Maurice Doreal?
The man behind the book was an American occult teacher who used the name Maurice Doreal. Around 1930 he founded the Brotherhood of the White Temple in Denver, Colorado, a spiritual organization that taught a blend of esoteric Christianity, Theosophy and his own revelations. The group later established a community near Sedalia, Colorado. Doreal died in 1963.
Doreal said that in 1925 he traveled to the Great Pyramid of Giza, where he was given access to the emerald tablets, translated them, and later returned them. He published his translation in the 1930s through his organization. He also made other dramatic claims, including encounters with hidden beings in the earth and in sacred mountains.
These claims were never independently confirmed. No one else reported seeing the tablets, no photographs or physical evidence have surfaced, and Egyptologists know of no such artifacts. That does not mean the book has nothing to offer. It means its origin story is part of the text’s mythology rather than a documented historical event.
It also helps to read Doreal in the context of his era. The early 20th century was full of teachers who claimed contact with hidden masters, lost continents and secret brotherhoods, building on the Theosophical writings of the late 1800s. Doreal’s work fits that pattern closely, in vocabulary and in theme. Seeing those connections does not take away the beauty of the text. It simply helps place it in history.
What the Tablets Teach
Read as spiritual literature, the Emerald Tablets of Thoth focus on a few recurring ideas. First, that humanity’s true nature is light, and that the purpose of life is to awaken and remember it. Second, that the universe moves in cycles, with civilizations rising and falling as consciousness expands and contracts.
Third, the tablets put great emphasis on inner mastery. They encourage disciplined meditation, control of the breath and attention, and a steady orientation toward the light even in dark times. Some passages describe specific practices for relaxation and inner travel, which many readers use as meditation scripts.
There are also darker passages about hidden forces and “dweller” beings that oppose humanity’s awakening. Readers interpret these in different ways, from literal spiritual warfare to symbolic descriptions of fear and ego. Whatever lens you use, the overall message is one of hope: wisdom survives cataclysm, and each person can choose to grow toward the light.

The Original Emerald Tablet: A Different Text
Long before Doreal, there was the Emerald Tablet, singular. This is a short, cryptic text attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, only about a dozen lines long, that became one of the foundational writings of alchemy. It is completely different from Doreal’s book in length, style and history.
The earliest known version appears in Arabic, in a work called the Book of the Secret of Creation, attributed to Balinas, the Arabic name for Apollonius of Tyana, and usually dated to the late 8th or early 9th century. Versions also appear in the body of writings attributed to the alchemist Jabir ibn Hayyan. Latin translations followed in the 12th century, and from there the text spread across medieval and Renaissance Europe.
It fascinated some of the greatest minds of the early modern period. Isaac Newton made his own translation of it, now preserved among his alchemical papers at King’s College, Cambridge. For alchemists, its lines described the process of transformation, both of metals and of the soul. When people speak of the Emerald Tablet in the history of science or philosophy, this is the text they mean.

Thoth and Hermes Trismegistus
Both texts trace their authority back to the same figure. Thoth was the ancient Egyptian god of writing, wisdom, magic and the moon, usually shown with the head of an ibis or as a baboon. He was the scribe of the gods, credited with inventing hieroglyphs and recording the judgment of souls in the afterlife.
When Greeks settled in Egypt after Alexander the Great, they identified Thoth with their own god Hermes, messenger and guide of souls. Over time this blended figure became Hermes Trismegistus, “thrice great Hermes,” the legendary author of a body of philosophical and magical writings known as the Hermetica. Those texts were largely composed in the early centuries of the common era.
Doreal took this tradition in a new direction by recasting Thoth as an Atlantean priest-king who brought his wisdom to Egypt. That idea does not appear in Egyptian or Greek sources. It belongs to the modern esoteric story of Atlantis, which you can explore in our article on the quest for Atlantis and its advanced civilization.
“As Above, So Below”: Where the Phrase Comes From
The most famous line connected with the Emerald Tablet is “as above, so below.” The tablet itself says something closer to this: that which is below is like that which is above, and that which is above is like that which is below, to accomplish the miracles of the one thing. It expresses the idea that the cosmos and the human being mirror each other.
The snappy four-word version was popularized by later esoteric writers. Helena Blavatsky used it, and the 1908 book The Kybalion, published anonymously by “Three Initiates,” made it a cornerstone of its Principle of Correspondence. From there it entered modern spirituality, tattoo parlors and pop culture.
Because of its fame, the phrase is often wrongly credited to Doreal’s Emerald Tablets of Thoth. It belongs to the older Hermetic tradition. The idea itself, that patterns repeat across scales from the stars to the self, runs through many ancient cultures, including the careful sky watching described in our piece on the Mayan eclipse code.

How to Read the Emerald Tablets of Thoth Today
So are the Emerald Tablets of Thoth authentic? As a translation of real ancient tablets, there is no evidence that they are. Their language reflects early 20th century esoteric writing, their ideas closely match the Theosophical and Atlantis literature of Doreal’s time, and the physical tablets have never been seen by anyone else.
As spiritual literature, though, they have clearly moved many people. Readers describe them as a source of courage, a guide for meditation and a reminder that the light within is stronger than the darkness around it. You can value those qualities without needing to believe the origin story, the same way people find wisdom in parables without treating them as history.
The healthiest approach is to read with both heart and mind. Enjoy the poetry, test the practices, and keep what helps you grow. At the same time, stay curious about real ancient texts, which are fascinating in their own right. Our coverage of the Herculaneum scrolls and the lost library and the original Ancient Aliens documentary shows how much is still being discovered about the ancient world.
