Biden Picks Kamala Harris As Running Mate
President Trump has issued his first comment about Biden’s VP pick. After glancing down at a list of talking points and ticking through a list of criticisms, Trump said She was my No. 1 draft pick. We’ll see how she works out.”
However, he also pointed out “she lied”, a reference to the first Democratic debate, where Harris captivated audiences by roasting Biden over his record for being tough on crime, and for working with segregationists.
With most Americans now doubting Biden’s ability to finish his first term, Harris isn’t just the first black woman, and first Asian woman, to co-headline a major party ticket. She’s also the first VP whom much of the country believes will actually be running things behind the scenes (perhaps in concert with Biden’s Secretaries of State and Treasury, and an ever-faithful chief of staff).
As Fox News pointed out in an opinion piece published after the news broke, Harris gives Biden’s campaign a distinct law and order bent. Experience as a prosecutor should help with playing the “attack dog” role that is traditionally a campaign duty of the VP.
The Trump campaign, of course, has already started unloading on Harris, and her record as California attorney general, and district attorney before that, will provide opponents with plenty of ammunition. But while she may be portrayed as too passive about police brutality, she can’t be painted as soft on crime.
The Kamala brand is an interesting one, since she is the daughter of Jamaican and Indian parents, along with, as of this afternoon, the first black woman on a major-party ticket.
With her prosecutorial bent, Harris is well suited to the running mate’s traditional role of attack dog. And she’ll be attacked back. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel quickly put out a statement that Biden has chosen “the person who would actually be in charge the next four years.” That dovetails with the president’s argument that the 77-year-old nominee is out of it and a captive of his party’s uber-liberal wing.
What’s more, by picking Harris, he has officially elevated the establishment’s second-favorite (after the aging former VP) to front-runner for the 2024 nomination (Biden isn’t expected to run for a second term, and indeed, possibly (probably?) won’t finish out his first.
Interestingly, online betting markets swung deeply in favor of Harris shortly before the news broke. Is it possible somebody had a little head start?

Dr. Scott Atlas Joins Presidential COVID 19 Council, Calls to End Lockdowns
Dr. Scott Atlas is the Robert Wesson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, an accomplished physician, and a scholar of public health. For several weeks, Dr. Atlas has been making the case in print and in other media that we as a society have overreacted in imposing draconian restrictions on movement, gatherings, schools, sports, and other activities.
He is not a COVID-19 denier—he believes the virus is a real threat and should be managed as such. But, as Dr. Atlas argues, there are some age groups and activities that are subject to very low risk. The one-size-fits-all approach we are currently using is overly authoritarian, inefficient, and not based in science.
Dr. Atlas’s prescription includes more protection for people in nursing homes, two weeks of strict self-isolation for those with mild symptoms, and most importantly, the opening of all K–12 schools. The latter recommendation is vital for restarting and maintaining the economy so that parents are not housebound trying to work and educate their children.
Dr. Atlas is also adamant that an economic shutdown, and all of the attendant issues that go along with it, is a terrible solution—the cure is worse than the disease. Finally, Dr. Atlas reveals some steps he’s taken in his own life to try to get things back to normal.
COVID-19 Lockdowns Are Neither Necessary, Nor Scientific, Nor Helpful

Restrictions in the US have included bans on serving customers in restaurants and other places of business, bans of peaceful gatherings of too many people in one location (in violation of “social distancing” requirements), and bans on religious worship by groups deemed to have too many people in one place of worship.
The First Amendment to the US Constitution lists the right to peaceably assemble and the right to free exercise of religion. The First Amendment is part of what is called the Bill of Rights. Note that these amendments are not known as the Bill of Privileges or the Bill of Nice Things to be Purchased by Taxes.
The US Constitution could not have been ratified without the Bill of Rights, so these rights are fundamental to what it means to be an American.
There is no question that the COVID-19 lockdowns denied Americans these fundamental rights. The only question is whether the denial of these rights was necessary.
Some proponents of lockdown start and end their argument by stating the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19. The magnitude of the number is supposed to end any further discussion.
Anyone who questions whether the lockdowns have actually saved any lives are dismissed as having a callous disregard for human life. Back when the death toll from COVID-19 was around thirty thousand, I compared COVID-19 deaths to the annual deaths from influenza.
Some of my colleagues repeatedly notify me when the death toll from COVID-19 is updated. Their point is that if deaths from COVID-19 exceed some arbitrary number the lockdowns will have been vindicated.
It doesn’t seem to matter whether the deaths occurred during lockdowns or not; deaths from COVID-19 justify any action by government.
Are China’s Naval Ambitions A Global Threat?

The more US aircraft carriers come to the South China Sea and exert pressure on China, the more it will prompt the PLA to develop complete and reliable methods against them. Once a war begins, these aircraft carriers are more likely to become vulnerable targets.

China’s decision to launch a fresh round of military exercises close to the disputed territory of Taiwan demonstrates that Beijing’s communist rulers have little intention of backing down in their increasingly provocative confrontation with America and its allies.
Despite the widespread international criticism China has received in recent weeks over its brutal suppression of pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, there is little sign that Beijing is prepared to adopt a more conciliatory tone.
The arrest earlier this week of Hong Kong’s local media mogul Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, the founder of the territory’s Apple Daily newspaper, prompted a fresh round of international condemnation, with US Vice President Mike Pence criticizing the arrest.
In a comment posted on Twitter, Mr Pence wrote that Mr Lai’s arrest is “deeply offensive & an affront to freedom loving people around the world.” Mr Pence continued that he was inspired by Mr Lai’s “stand for democracy & the rights & autonomy that were promised to the people of Hong Kong by Beijing”.
The intense criticism Beijing has attracted over its heavy-handed treatment of Hong Kong appears, though, to have made little impression of Chinese President Xi Jingping and the rest of the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
On the contrary, the adverse global reaction to Beijing’s policies seems only to have encouraged China to adopt an even more aggressive attitude, such as launching a new wave of military exercises close to Taiwan.
Announcing the commencement of the exercises on Thursday, the Chinese military sought to justify their action by claiming that they were being undertaken “to safeguard national sovereignty.”
Beijing indicated the exercises were being conducted in response to a recent upsurge in US diplomatic exchanges with Taipei, and were launched the day after Alex Azar, the US health secretary, became the most senior Washington cabinet official to visit Taiwan since 1979, a move designed to demonstrate the Trump administration’s unstinting support for Taiwan in its increasingly acrimonious dispute with Beijing.
In a rare comment seeking to justify China’s military activity in the area, Colonel Zhang Chunhui, the spokesman of the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command, said Beijing had been provoked into launching the exercises. In a threatening reference to the US, he said:
“Certain large countries are incessantly making negative moves regarding the Taiwan issue and sending wrong signals to the ‘Taiwan independence’ forces, seriously threatening peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
Amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing, the US last month dispatched two aircraft carriers and four warships to the South China Sea to deter any further acts of aggression by the Chinese military, especially in the contested waters of the South China Sea.
The deployment followed a series of incidents in the region where the Chinese military was accused of using bullying tactics against a number of neighboring Asian states such as Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines.
In addition, China has been accused of indulging in aggressive conduct in the East China Sea, where Beijing continues to press its claim to sovereignty over the Japan-administered Senkaku Islands. In the most recent incident, Japanese Coast Guard officials reported last month that Chinese patrol ships had entered the 12-nautical-mile territorial waters around the disputed island, and had remained there for “an extended time.”
Nor is China’s unwelcome activity in international waters confined to its immediate vicinity. Earlier this month officials in Ecuador complained about the presence of an enormous Chinese flagged fishing fleet that was operating in international waters close to the Galapagos Islands, claiming the fleets’ massive fishing operation posed a threat to the islands’ delicate marine ecosystem. The Galapagos Islands were designated a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1978.
All of which suggests that, far from being embarrassed by the recent criticism it has endured, Beijing remains determined to establish its naval presence around the world.

- Arecibo Observatory, a giant radio telescope located in Puerto Rico, is well-known for being the epicenter of the tracking of potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids. The team behind its operation has also searched for signs of extra-terrestrial life for decades now, but to no avail so far. A cryptic overnight accident has led to breakage and a forced stop of the Puerto Rico’s iconic Arecibo Observatory, after an auxiliary cable above the telescope broke down and crashed into its reflector panels, creating a giant 30-meter-long hole, the University of Central Florida, which operates the facility, revealed in a statement this week. During a Friday news conference, Arecibo Observatory director Francisco Cordova said that 250 of the telescope’s reflector panels had sustained damage, but the reason behind the cable’s crash remains unclear, with the team as of yet to fully assess the extent of the catastrophe and determine the cost for the giant’s repair. The accident occurred on 10 August at around 2:45 am, when the cable, supporting a platform above the radio disk, cracked and then slashed through the dish, creating a massive hole. Several support cables underneath the disk have also been damaged, Cordova said.
- Facebook claims its new oversight board, which has the authority to allow or remove content from the platform, is diverse in thought and opinion, but an investigation has determined that 18 out of the 20 members of the board have ties to liberal billionaire George Soros or groups he supports. Sheryl Attkisson’s investigation for RealClearInvestigations revealed that 18 out of 20 members of the “independent” board “collaborated with or are tied to groups that have received funding from George Soros’ Open Society Foundations.” The Open Society Foundation is perhaps the foremost and most well-funded progressive organization in the world. Soros has donated billions to various left-wing causes for decades, and most recently donated over $200 million to Black Lives Matter and another $50 million to elect former Vice-President Joe Biden in the United States. the RealClearInvestigations report notes that Evelyn Aswad, a U.S. law professor, is a recipient of a grant from a Knight Foundation that has partnered with Open Society Foundations. One of the four co-chairs of the board, Columbia University law school professor Jamal Greene, and Columbia University has financial ties to the Soros family. Another co-chair, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, is the former socialist Prime Minister of Denmark, and is a trustee at the International Crisis Group funded by the Open Society Foundation. Moreover, both Soros and his son Alexander are members of the International Crisis Group board. Other members have received substantial sums of money from the Open Society Foundation.
- The chief of the Metropolitan Police has offered to assist US authorities with their investigation into Prince Andrew’s ties to disgrace paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Dame Cressida Dick said that while the focus of the investigation was ‘clearly’ in America, she added the Met would assist US authorities should it be required “at any stage”. During a wide-ranging interview with Channel 4 News, the Commissioner was asked about the Duke of York’s alleged involvement in the ongoing Maxwell case. “The locus and focus of any investigation in relation to Jeffrey Epstein for example is clearly in America. If the Americans need our assistance at any stage, then we will give them that”. she said. If the Duke fails to respond voluntarily to requests he could be called to a UK court to answer questions in what is known as a mutual legal assistance request.
- South Africa, the current mediator in a long-running feud over Ethiopia’s dam on the Blue Nile, on Thursday urged that talks should continue despite threats of suspension and walkout. Egypt on Tuesday called for a halt in the talks while Sudan threatened to withdraw, rattling efforts to calm the dispute. In a statement, South Africa, which as current chair of the African Union (AU) has been acting as mediator, said negotiations were at a “critical phase” and it “encourages the parties to remain engaged”. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has been a source of tension in the Nile River basin ever since Ethiopia broke ground on it in 2011. Egypt and Sudan view the dam as a threat to vital water supplies, while Ethiopia considers it crucial for its electrification and development. Ethiopia, he said, now insists the deal on the dam be linked to the wider question of sharing the waters of the Blue Nile.
- Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has said it is a “lie” that fires are ravaging the Amazon rainforest, despite data from his own government showing the number of blazes is rising. Bolsonaro has faced international condemnation for presiding over huge fires and rising deforestation in the Amazon – criticism he took issue with in a speech to a video conference of countries that share the world’s biggest rainforest. “Tropical rainforest doesn’t catch fire. So this story that the Amazon is burning is a lie and we have to fight it with real numbers,” he said on Tuesday. More than 10,000 fires have been recorded in the first 10 days of August, up 17 percent from the same period a year ago, according to data from the country’s national space research agency Inpe. Experts say the fires are typically not sparked naturally, but set by humans to clear land illegally for farming and grazing. Last year, huge fires devastated the Amazon from May to October, sending a thick haze of black smoke to Sao Paulo, thousands of kilometers away.
- A team of FBI investigators is due to arrive in Lebanon this weekend to take part in an investigation into the massive explosion that devastated Beirut earlier this month. David Hale, the US under-secretary for political affairs, called for a thorough and transparent investigation, adding that the FBI team is taking part at the invitation of Lebanese authorities to find answers about what caused the August 4 explosion which killed nearly 180 people and wounded thousands. French investigators are also taking part in the Lebanese-led probe. The cause of the fire that ignited 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate at Beirut’s port remains unclear. Documents have emerged showing the country’s top leadership and security officials were aware of the chemicals stored at the port. “We really need to make sure that there is a thorough, a transparent and credible investigation. I know that is what everyone is demanding,” Hale said.
- US toy company Hasbro is removing its Trolls doll from stores after a public outcry over an inappropriately placed button that some parents believe “sexualizes” the doll. The company announced its decision to discontinue the doll after an online petition received more than 490,000 signatures. US mom Jessica McManis said she she found the doll inappropriate after her two-year-old daughter received one as a birthday gift. The doll has one button on its stomach, which is advertised on the packaging, and another between her legs. On the back of the box, it states if you press the button on the stomach, the doll will say 10 phrases and sounds. However, there is no mention of the button under the doll’s skirt and placed on the “private area”, McManis said on the video. When pressing the second button, the doll gasps and makes sounds like “whee” and “oh”, which McManis described as a “sexualizing a children’s toy”.
- Severe flooding from this year’s rainy season in China has left a total of 219 fatalities and more than 63 million people affected, the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) said in a press conference on Thursday, August 13, 2020. Over the past two months, more than four million have been evacuated amid historically heavy rains, with further deluge expected to continue in the weeks ahead. The major flood season in China arrived on June 1 as heavy downpours battered several provinces, causing the water levels in rivers and lakes to increase, including the Yangtze River. A total of 634 rivers across the nation burst their banks, with water levels surpassing the warning level. 194 of these rivers exceeded maximum guaranteed safety level, and 53 broke historic records.
- US President Donald Trump said Saturday, while speaking at a press conference, that he was “going to start looking at it”, when asked about the possibility of pardoning Edward Snowden, a former CIA agent, who fled the US after leaking classified documents showing that the National Security Agency was collecting the telephone records of millions of US citizens. Trump claimed that he was “not that aware of the Snowden situation” but he was “going to start looking at it”. “There are many, many people. It seems to be a split decision. The many people think that he should be somehow treated differently. And other people think he did very bad things. And I’m going to take a very good look at it. I have seen people that are very conservative and very liberal and they agree on the same issue and they agree both ways”, Trump said.

The corpse of decayed sunspot AR2770 erupted this morning, Aug. 15th at 0647 UTC, producing a C2-class solar flare. A pulse of X-rays briefly ionized the top of Earth’s atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio brownout over Asia, the Middle East, and eastern Africa: map. NOAA analysts are examining the event to see if it produced a CME.
