The Who Killed the Colorado River documentary treats a vanishing river as a case to be solved rather than a weather story to be reported. The Colorado supplies water to roughly forty million people across seven western states and part of northern Mexico, irrigates a substantial share of American winter produce, and generates hydroelectric power for the region. It also no longer reliably reaches the sea. This film examines how a river that large disappears, and it does the useful thing of treating the question as one with multiple defendants rather than a single cause.

What the Who Killed the Colorado River Documentary Investigates

The framing is deliberately forensic. Rather than opening with drought as a given, the film works backward from the visible symptoms. Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the two largest reservoirs in the United States, both fell to record lows in recent years and left the pale mineral bands on canyon walls that photographers now use as shorthand for the whole crisis. Those white rings mark where the water used to be, and they are the physical evidence this investigation starts from.

From there it separates the possible causes. Some of the water loss is climatic. Some of it was written into law a century ago. Some of it is a consequence of what the region chose to grow and where it chose to build. The film’s value lies in refusing to collapse all three into one convenient explanation.

A River Divided on Paper That Never Existed

The first defendant is an agreement. The Colorado River Compact of 1922 divided the river between an upper basin and a lower basin, with a later treaty adding an allocation for Mexico. The problem is arithmetic. The negotiators based their division on flow measurements taken during one of the wettest stretches in the river’s recorded history, and they allocated more water on paper than the river has typically carried since.

That overallocation was baked into a century of law, infrastructure and development. Cities were built, farms were planted and dams were financed on the assumption that the paper water would show up. For decades reservoir storage absorbed the gap. Once storage dropped, the gap became visible all at once, which is why a slow structural problem looked like a sudden emergency.

Drought or Permanent Aridification

The second defendant is the climate itself, and this is where the language matters. Drought implies a temporary deviation that ends. Tree ring reconstructions covering more than a thousand years indicate the current dry period in the Southwest ranks among the most severe in that entire record, and researchers increasingly describe what is happening as aridification, a shift to a permanently drier baseline rather than a dip that will correct.

The mechanism is not only reduced precipitation. Warmer temperatures increase evaporation from reservoirs and soil, reduce snowpack, and cause snow to melt earlier and soak into dry ground instead of running into the river. The same amount of snow now yields less water at the gauge than it did decades ago. That is a hard finding with direct operational consequences for every projection the basin states rely on.

Where the Water Actually Goes

The third defendant is consumption, and the numbers here surprise most viewers. The overwhelming majority of Colorado River water goes to agriculture rather than to cities, with a large share of that irrigating hay and alfalfa grown to feed cattle, some of it exported. Lawns, pools and urban growth get the public attention, and municipal conservation has genuinely improved in places like Las Vegas and Phoenix, but residential use is a minority of the total.

That means the meaningful decisions are agricultural and legal, involving water rights held for generations under a seniority system that rewards historic use rather than current efficiency. Basin states and tribal nations have negotiated reductions and compensated fallowing arrangements, and the operating guidelines governing how the reservoirs are managed are themselves up for renegotiation. Cloud seeding programs funded by basin states add another layer to the picture and are worth understanding on their own terms, given how much weather modification is discussed and how modest its measured effects actually are.

Why This Film Is Worth Watching

Water is the constraint that decides what the American West can be, and very few people outside the region understand how close the margins have become. The Who Killed the Colorado River documentary lays out the physical reality, the legal architecture and the agricultural economics clearly enough that you can form your own judgment about which factor carries the most blame, which is exactly what a film built around that question should do.

Watch it with the distinction between drought and aridification in mind, because almost every policy argument in the basin turns on which of those two things is happening.
