That changed in 2017 with the detection of the object designated 1I/ʻOumuamua, whose unusual elongated shape and non gravitational acceleration generated serious scientific debate. A second confirmed visitor, the comet 2I/Borisov, followed in 2019 and behaved much more conventionally. A third interstellar object was identified in 2025.

These detections established something new. Our solar system is not a closed system, and material from other stellar neighbourhoods does pass through it. That fact alone justifies close attention without requiring any additional interpretation.

Where the Science Pushes Back

The central difficulty with the film’s thesis is one of scale. Confirmed interstellar objects are small, on the order of a kilometre or less across, and they pass through at enormous distances relative to their size. The Sun contains virtually all the mass of the solar system and generates the magnetic field and particle flux that define its electromagnetic environment. A body of that size has no plausible mechanism for meaningfully altering conditions across the inner solar system, and mainstream heliophysics attributes variations in solar activity to processes internal to the Sun, chiefly its magnetic dynamo and the roughly eleven year cycle it drives.

The appearance of correlation between a visitor’s arrival and a period of heightened solar activity is better explained by the fact that solar maximum conditions produce heightened activity regardless of what is passing through. On the question of whether such objects are sending or receiving signals, no evidence of artificial origin has been found for any confirmed interstellar object, and the anomalous acceleration observed in the first case has conventional explanations involving outgassing that most researchers accept.

Why It Is Worth Watching

This film earns its place by asking a question that is legitimately open even though its proposed answer is not supported. We genuinely do not know much about interstellar objects, because we have only recently begun detecting them and each one has been observed briefly on its way out. The sample is tiny and the observing windows have been short. Real uncertainty exists here, and it is not the manufactured kind.

What the solar system energy upsurge documentary does well is refuse the assumption that our local environment is static and self contained. What it does less well is fill the resulting uncertainty with a specific story. Watch it for the questions, keep the scale objection firmly in mind, and follow the actual observational campaigns on these objects as they develop.
