The Our World Is on Fire documentary travels a long way to make a single argument. It moves from the boreal forests of Canada to the dry plains of the Somali Peninsula, and in each place it asks the same question about what happens when heat and drought arrive faster than the people living there can adapt. The film’s framing is direct. What was once described as climate change has become, in its words, a climate crisis, and the evidence it offers is drawn less from projections than from landscapes that have already changed.
Two Landscapes, One Pattern
The choice to anchor the film in the boreal forest and the Horn of Africa is not accidental, because the two places fail in opposite directions from the same cause. The boreal belt is the largest forested region on the planet, a vast ring of spruce and pine across the northern latitudes that holds an enormous quantity of carbon in its trees and in the peat and permafrost beneath them. Warmer, drier summers there mean longer fire seasons and fires that burn deeper into the ground rather than simply through the canopy.
The Somali Peninsula presents the other face. There the problem is rainfall that arrives late, or arrives insufficiently, or does not arrive at all across consecutive seasons. The consequence is not fire but the slow failure of pasture and cropland, and the displacement of communities whose entire economy rests on livestock that cannot survive without grazing. The documentary puts these side by side deliberately, arguing that a single warming trend produces catastrophe through whichever local vulnerability is nearest to hand.
Why Fire Behavior Is Changing
The section on wildfire is the strongest part of the film, largely because the mechanism is straightforward enough to show rather than assert. Hotter air draws more moisture out of vegetation and soil. Drier fuel ignites more readily and burns more intensely. Longer warm seasons extend the window in which ignition can happen at all, and in the far north an earlier thaw and later freeze stretch that window at both ends.
What follows from this is the part viewers tend to find most unsettling. Fires in carbon rich northern soils can smoulder underground through winter and resurface the following spring, and burning peat and permafrost releases carbon that had been locked away for a very long time. The documentary treats this as a reinforcing loop, where warming drives fire and fire contributes to warming. This feedback is an active area of research rather than a fully quantified certainty, and the film states it with more confidence than the science currently supports, though the underlying dynamic is well established.
The Human Ledger in the Our World Is on Fire Documentary
Where the Our World Is on Fire documentary distinguishes itself from the many films that cover this ground is in refusing to stay at the level of the atmosphere. It spends its time with people whose way of life is the thing actually at stake, the communities evacuated ahead of fire fronts, the herders watching water sources fail, the families deciding whether to move. The argument is that a global average temperature is an abstraction, and that the real measure of the crisis is how many specific places stop being livable in their existing form.
This is also where the film makes its emotional case, and viewers should recognize it as such. The imagery is chosen for impact, and the narration reaches for urgency. That is a legitimate choice for advocacy filmmaking, but it means the film is arguing a position rather than surveying a debate.
Context and Contested Ground
Some care is warranted in how individual events are attributed. Mainstream climate science is confident that warming increases the frequency and severity of fire weather and lengthens fire seasons, and attribution studies have repeatedly linked specific extreme seasons to human influence. It is more cautious about assigning any single fire or any single drought to climate change alone, because ignition sources, decades of fire suppression policy that allowed fuel to accumulate, land management practices and local weather all contribute.
The same applies to drought in the Horn of Africa, where natural ocean cycles have a documented and substantial influence on rainfall alongside the warming trend. The film tends to compress these contributing factors into one explanation. Holding the fuller picture in mind does not undercut its central point so much as complicate the solutions it implies, since forest management and water infrastructure turn out to matter alongside emissions.
Why It Is Worth Watching
Taken as a piece of witness rather than a scientific briefing, this film does something valuable. It collapses the distance between a statistic and a place, and it makes the geographic reach of the problem legible in a way that charts do not. A viewer finishes it understanding that the boreal forest and the Somali Peninsula are connected, and that is a genuine insight rather than a rhetorical trick.
Watch it for the reporting from the ground and for the fire science, then carry the questions it raises into the attribution literature, where the careful work of separating causes is actually done. The film is a starting point, and it is an effective one.
