Forbidden Knowledge: Strange Lost Lands | Documentary

The Strange Lost Lands documentary takes up one of the most persistent themes in human storytelling, which is the land that used to be there and is not there now. Subtitled as an examination of the hidden truths of prehistory, the film moves through the territories that mythology, cartography and geology have each claimed were swallowed by water, ice or time. It belongs to the Forbidden Knowledge strand of history programming, which means it is comfortable sitting with unresolved questions rather than closing them off, and the Great Awakening Report files it under Chronicles of History for exactly that reason.

What the Strange Lost Lands Documentary Explores

The organizing idea is simple and genuinely unsettling. For most of the period in which anatomically modern humans have existed, the map of the world looked nothing like the one hanging in a classroom. Sea levels at the height of the last glaciation stood well over a hundred metres lower than today. Coastlines ran far out beyond where they now sit, land bridges connected places that are now separated by open ocean, and the most habitable ground, the flat river deltas and sheltered coastal plains where people have always preferred to live, is now underwater. The film works through what that means for anyone trying to reconstruct where early societies actually were.

The Lands That Really Did Disappear

Some of the territory covered is not speculative at all. Doggerland, the low lying plain that joined Britain to continental Europe, is a documented landscape. Fishing vessels working the North Sea have dredged up peat, animal bone and worked flint tools from it for well over a century. Sundaland in Southeast Asia and the Sahul shelf to its south were similarly vast and similarly drowned. Beringia carried the populations that entered the Americas. None of this is contested, and the film is on firm ground here. What it draws attention to is how little of that submerged ground has ever been surveyed archaeologically, and how thin our picture of those populations therefore has to be.

Atlantis, Lemuria and the Contested Cases

The Strange Lost Lands documentary also moves into territory where the evidence thins out considerably. Atlantis enters the record through two dialogues of Plato and appears nowhere earlier, which is why most classicists read it as a constructed parable about civic hubris rather than a report. Lemuria has an even stranger pedigree. It began in the nineteenth century as a proposed land bridge invented to explain lemur distribution across the Indian Ocean, was abandoned once plate tectonics supplied a better explanation, and was then adopted wholesale by esoteric writers who populated it with a vanished spiritual race. Mu followed a similar path. These cases are presented in the film as part of the story, and viewers are better served treating them as cultural history than as geography.

Why Sea Level Is the Hinge of Prehistory

The strongest argument running through the film has nothing to do with lost races. It is methodological. If the most attractive human habitat during the Ice Age is now sitting under shallow sea, then the archaeological record we have is not a sample of early human life, it is a sample of early human life in the places that stayed dry. Upland sites, caves and inland camps survive. Coastal towns and estuary settlements do not. Whatever conclusions get drawn from that record inherit the bias, and underwater archaeology has only begun to correct it.

Watching It With a Critical Eye

Take the documented drowned landscapes seriously and hold the mythological ones more loosely. That division is the most useful thing a viewer can bring to this film, because the two categories are presented alongside each other without much separation, as is common in the genre. Watched that way, the Strange Lost Lands documentary is a strong introduction to a real and underappreciated problem in prehistory, and a reminder that the boundary between legend and lost geography has moved before and may move again.
