Hancock has spent decades arguing that the conventional timeline of civilization has a hole in it. The standard account has humans living as scattered hunter gatherers until agriculture appears around ten thousand years ago, with monumental building and organized religion following on afterward. Hancock’s position is that this sequence has been treated as settled long before the evidence justified it, and that a serious catastrophe near the close of the Pleistocene would explain a great deal of what the standard account struggles with. The impact hypothesis proposes that a fragmenting comet or a swarm of cometary debris struck or airburst over the northern ice sheets, triggering continent scale fires, catastrophic meltwater floods and a sudden collapse in global temperature. A Catastrophic History of the World treats that scenario as the missing chapter, arguing that a species which lost its coastal settlements to rising seas and its interior to fire and flood would look, to later excavators, like a species that had never built anything at all.

The Physical Evidence Hancock and Carlson Point To

Carlson’s contribution is the landscape itself. The Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington are the best known example, a region of stripped basalt, enormous dry cataracts and giant current ripples that mainstream geology now accepts were carved by colossal glacial outburst floods. That acceptance was hard won. The geologist J Harlen Bretz proposed catastrophic flooding in the nineteen twenties and spent decades being dismissed, because the discipline at the time was committed to slow uniform processes. Carlson uses that history as a warning about how the field handles sudden events. Alongside the flood geology, the impact researchers point to a boundary layer found at sites across several continents containing elevated platinum, microspherules, meltglass and in some reports nanodiamonds, all of which they read as the signature of an extraterrestrial impact.

Where Mainstream Science Pushes Back

The counterposition deserves stating clearly. Most archaeologists and many earth scientists reject the impact hypothesis. They argue that the proposed marker layer has failed independent replication at several key sites, that microspherules and meltglass can form through ordinary wildfire and volcanic processes, that the dating of the samples has been inconsistent, and that no crater or crater field of the required scale has been identified. They generally prefer an explanation based on meltwater disrupting North Atlantic ocean circulation, a mechanism that requires no impact at all. On the wider claim of a lost advanced civilization, the mainstream objection is simpler still, which is the absence of the settlements, tools, refuse and burials that any large population inevitably leaves behind.

Why This Presentation Is Worth Your Time

Watch it for the structure of the argument rather than for a verdict. A Catastrophic History of the World is one of the clearest available statements of the catastrophist case, delivered by the two people most associated with putting it in front of a general audience, and the on stage exchange between them is where the interesting friction lives. It also raises a question that stands on its own merits regardless of where the impact debate lands, which is how confidently any discipline should hold a timeline built from the fraction of the past that happens to have survived. Sites like Gobekli Tepe were unknown a few decades ago and pushed monumental construction back further than anyone expected. That alone is reason to keep the file open.
