In deep water the resulting wave may be only a meter high with a wavelength stretching hundreds of kilometers, which makes it nearly invisible to ships passing directly over it. It travels at speeds comparable to a passenger jet. As it reaches shallower coastal water it slows, and the enormous energy it carries has nowhere to go but upward. The wave steepens and rears. Crucially, it does not arrive as a single wave but as a train of them, and the first is frequently not the largest, which has repeatedly drawn people back toward the shore during the lull.

The Events the Film Revisits

The episode works through history’s worst cases, and the modern record is dominated by two. The Indian Ocean event of December 2004 killed roughly two hundred and thirty thousand people across fourteen countries, and it remains the defining catastrophe of the genre precisely because so much of the death toll was avoidable. The Indian Ocean had no tsunami warning system at the time. Hours passed between the rupture off Sumatra and the arrival of waves on distant coastlines, and in many places nobody was told.

The Japanese event of March 2011 offers the opposite lesson. Japan had the most sophisticated warning infrastructure in the world, seawalls along vulnerable coasts and a population drilled in evacuation. Close to twenty thousand people still died, because the earthquake was larger than the defenses had been designed against and the water overtopped barriers that had been considered sufficient. The film uses the pairing well. Preparation saves enormous numbers of lives and it does not make a coastline safe.

Warning Systems and the Minutes That Matter

The most practically valuable material here concerns time. Detection depends on seismic networks identifying a large undersea earthquake within minutes, and on deep ocean pressure sensors confirming that a wave has actually been generated, since not every large quake produces one. That confirmation is what prevents the false alarms that erode public compliance with evacuation orders.

For distant coastlines this chain can deliver hours of warning. For communities sitting directly above the rupture it may deliver nothing at all, and the documentary is right to emphasize that in those places the earthquake itself is the warning. Strong shaking near a coast, or a sudden and unexplained withdrawal of the sea, means moving inland and uphill immediately rather than waiting for an official message.

Not Only Earthquakes

The film’s framing attributes tsunamis to plate movement beneath the ocean floor, which describes the great majority of them but not all. Submarine landslides can generate waves that are locally far higher than anything a typical earthquake produces, and volcanic collapse has done the same, as the destruction around Krakatoa in 1883 demonstrated. These sources are harder to detect and can strike with almost no seismic warning at all, which makes them a live problem for early warning systems rather than a historical footnote.

This matters for how a viewer interprets risk. A coastline far from any subduction zone is not exempt, because the relevant hazard may be an unstable slope on the continental shelf a short distance offshore.
