John D. Rockefeller is routinely described as the wealthiest American who ever lived, and when fortunes are measured against the size of the economy that produced them the claim holds up better than most superlatives do. This Rockefeller documentary traces the arc from a young bookkeeper in Cleveland to the founder of Standard Oil and then to a man who spent his final decades giving money away on a scale nobody had attempted before. The interesting part is not the accumulation. It is how thoroughly the methods used to build the fortune shaped the institutions the fortune later created.

How the monopoly was actually built

Standard Oil was founded in Ohio in 1870, at a moment when refining was a chaotic business full of small operators competing on price and quality with no particular advantage over one another. Rockefeller’s insight was that scale would win if scale could be assembled faster than rivals could react, and he assembled it ruthlessly. Refineries were bought out, often with the alternative made clear. Competitors who would not sell found themselves undercut in their own markets by a firm that could absorb losses they could not.

The decisive lever, and the one the film gives proper attention to, was transportation. Standard Oil negotiated secret rebates from the railroads, paying less per barrel than anyone else, and in some arrangements collected payments on the shipments of its competitors as well. That is not competition in any recognizable sense. It is a structural advantage obtained privately and used to make rivalry arithmetically impossible. By the early 1880s the company refined the overwhelming majority of oil in the United States.

The break up that made him richer

Public resistance took decades to organize, and when it arrived it came substantially through journalism. Ida Tarbell’s serialized history of the company, published in McClure’s magazine in the early 1900s, laid out the rebate arrangements and the acquisition tactics in documented detail and permanently changed how the company was seen. The legal machinery followed. In 1911 the Supreme Court ordered Standard Oil dissolved, and it was broken into dozens of successor companies whose names became familiar over the following century, including the firms that grew into Exxon, Mobil, Chevron and Amoco.

The outcome carries a lesson the film does not let slide. Rockefeller held shares in every successor. As the separate companies were valued independently and the market repriced them, his personal fortune rose substantially. The remedy for the monopoly enriched the monopolist. Anyone studying how regulation interacts with concentrated wealth should sit with that fact for a moment, because the pattern recurs.

What the Rockefeller documentary says about philanthropy

The second half of his life is where this Rockefeller documentary becomes genuinely useful rather than merely familiar. He was a devout Baptist who tithed from his earliest wages and gave consistently throughout his life, which complicates any simple reading of him as a cynic. He was also, by the early 1900s, one of the most hated men in the country, and he retained a public relations adviser who understood that image could be rebuilt through visible gestures. The habit of handing out dimes to strangers comes from that period and was entirely deliberate.

Both things are true simultaneously, and the film is better for holding them together. The giving was sincere and it was strategic. What matters more than his motives is the structure he invented. Rather than donating to causes directly, he created permanent, professionally staffed institutions with endowments designed to outlast him, including the foundation that carries the family name, a major research institute in New York, a board that reshaped American schooling, and the University of Chicago. That model of organized philanthropy became the template nearly every large foundation has followed since.

Medicine, education and the long tail of the fortune

This is the thread that places the film in the old money research rather than in a business history shelf. In 1910 the Carnegie Foundation published Abraham Flexner’s survey of North American medical education, and it was damning. Standards varied wildly, many schools were little more than diploma mills, and training frequently bore no relationship to laboratory science. The report recommended consolidation around a rigorous scientific model, and Rockefeller and Carnegie money then flowed heavily toward the institutions that met the new criteria.

The mainstream assessment is that this was a public good. American medicine became evidence based, unqualified practitioners were pushed out, and outcomes improved enormously. The critical reading, which is the one this library tends to foreground, notes what else happened. Schools teaching homeopathic, eclectic and other competing traditions lost funding and closed, medical training was standardized around an approach that suited pharmaceutical development, and the men financing the reform held substantial interests in the chemical and petroleum industries that the new model would come to rely on. Both readings describe real events. The disagreement is about whether the convergence of interest and outcome was incidental.

Why it is worth watching

Watch it for the mechanics. The film shows how a fortune was assembled through control of a bottleneck, how legal intervention arrived a generation late and redistributed nothing, and how the money was then converted into permanent institutional influence that no antitrust ruling could touch. That sequence, control then challenge then institutionalization, is the single most useful template in this section of the library, and the Rockefeller story is where it was first executed at full scale.

The film was featured in the July 2026 Monthly Report under the old money research and sits with the rest of the dynastic wealth material in the MUST WATCH Documentary Library. Watch it first, then watch the films on the banking families, and the century starts to read as one continuous story.
