The CIA classified pole shift book at the center of this documentary is a short volume called The Adam and Eve Story, written by an American engineer named Chan Thomas and published in the mid nineteen sixties. Its argument is that the Earth’s crust periodically slips catastrophically over the interior, that this has happened many times, that it wipes out whatever civilization is standing when it occurs, and that the flood and destruction narratives preserved in scripture and myth are eyewitness memory of the last event rather than allegory. The reason anyone is still talking about it is not the argument itself. It is that a copy sat in the Central Intelligence Agency’s collection and was eventually released to the public with most of its contents blacked out.

Thomas proposed that the crust and the deep interior of the planet are effectively decoupled, and that under certain conditions the outer shell can rotate rapidly relative to the axis of spin. In his account the consequences are close to unimaginable. Oceans leave their basins and sweep across continents. Winds reach speeds no structure survives. Regions that were tropical end up under ice and regions under ice end up temperate, and the fossil record of animals flash frozen with undigested vegetation in their stomachs is presented as evidence of exactly this kind of instantaneous climate inversion.

He tied the mechanism to the Earth’s magnetic field, arguing that reversals and crustal displacement are connected phenomena, and he placed the most recent event within the window of human memory. That last move is what makes the book more than a geological curiosity. If he was right, the story of Eden and the expulsion, and the flood traditions found across unconnected cultures, are compressed accounts of a survivable planetary catastrophe rather than religious invention.

Where the idea came from

Thomas was not working alone in this territory. The broader theory of crustal displacement is most associated with Charles Hapgood, whose book Earth’s Shifting Crust appeared in 1958 and carried a foreword by Albert Einstein. Einstein’s involvement is frequently cited as though it were an endorsement of the full theory. What he actually wrote was more careful, expressing interest in the idea and encouraging its investigation while noting the difficulty of the mechanism. The distinction matters, and documentaries in this space routinely blur it.

Hapgood’s version and Thomas’s version differ in their details and in their timescales, but they share the core proposition that the outer shell of the planet can move as a unit, quickly, with catastrophic results. That proposition arrived just as plate tectonics was being established, and the two frameworks are not compatible.

The redactions, and what they do and do not prove

Here the film is on its most interesting ground, and here it also requires the most careful reading. The agency’s copy of the book was declassified and released through its public reading room, and the released version is heavily redacted, with substantial portions of the middle of the text withheld. That much is verifiable and genuinely strange. A commercially published book, sitting in a government collection, released decades later with its contents obscured, is an odd artifact by any standard.

What the framing in this documentary tends to overstate is the sequence. The book was not seized before anyone could read it. It was published and sold, copies circulated, and the text has been available in various editions since. The CIA did not prevent its publication. What the agency did was hold a copy and then, when releasing that copy under declassification review, black out portions of it. Why a published book would receive redactions at all is a fair question with no satisfying public answer, and it is the strongest thing the film has. It is not the same as suppression of the work itself, and viewers should keep those two claims separate.

Where the science currently stands

Mainstream geology does not accept rapid crustal displacement. Plate tectonics describes a crust divided into plates moving at speeds measured in centimeters per year, driven by mantle convection, with no known mechanism capable of sliding the entire shell in a matter of hours or days. The rotational inertia involved is enormous and the energy budget does not work.

Geomagnetic reversals, by contrast, are entirely real. The field has flipped many times, the record is written clearly in seafloor basalt, and the most recent full reversal occurred roughly 780,000 years ago with shorter excursions since. The established picture is that these transitions unfold over centuries to millennia rather than overnight, and that no mass extinction has been convincingly tied to one. Thomas’s linkage of magnetic reversal to sudden crustal slippage is the part the evidence does not support.

Why it is worth watching

Watch it for the artifact rather than the geology. The CIA classified pole shift book is a real document with a genuinely unexplained redaction history, and the film does a service by putting the primary material in front of you. The right posture is to treat Thomas’s catastrophism as a hypothesis that the physical evidence has not borne out, while taking seriously the narrower and much more answerable question the documentary raises. Why does a published book in a government file come back with its pages blacked out, and who decided which pages?
