The Arjunas and the mini moon population

The 2013 airburst over Chelyabinsk, which injured well over a thousand people and damaged thousands of buildings, came from exactly that blind spot and was not seen by anyone before it arrived.

Most near Earth objects are tracked and cataloged and pose no threat in any reasonable timeframe. The uncertainty sits in the small end of the population, the objects measured in meters rather than kilometers, which are numerous, poorly surveyed and still capable of releasing the energy of a substantial bomb in the upper atmosphere. Studying the ones that drift into temporary orbit is one of the few ways to learn about that population at close range.

The reward side, and why anyone would want to go

The opportunity is a matter of orbital mechanics. Reaching a body already moving at close to Earth’s own velocity costs far less fuel than reaching almost anything else in the solar system, in some cases less than landing on the Moon. That makes these objects the most accessible pieces of untouched material available to us, and they are of real interest for sample return, for testing deflection techniques on something harmless before it matters, and for any future attempt to extract water or metals off world.

There is a scientific prize as well. Analysis of the quasi satellite Kamo’oalewa has suggested it may be a fragment blasted off the Moon by an ancient impact, which would make it a piece of lunar geology sitting in an orbit far easier to reach than the lunar surface. A sample return mission has been dispatched to that object, and what it brings back will test the idea directly.

Behind the phrase is a genuine population of objects that shares our neighborhood, that we cannot reliably see, that could hurt us, and that may also be the most practical stepping stone we have off this planet.
