One of the best known compositions describes Nanna loading a boat and journeying upriver to Nippur to visit his father Enlil, complete with a cargo manifest.

So the claim that the Sumerians called the Moon a vessel is not invented. It sits in the texts. The entire question the film raises is what kind of vessel the scribes had in mind, and whether a civilisation of farmers, priests and river traders reaching for an image of a crescent shape gliding through darkness would naturally land on the boats they saw every day, or whether they were preserving the memory of something else.

It becomes a description of a craft, the Moon becomes an object that was brought into orbit rather than one that formed there, and the purpose behind it becomes a question of engineering and intent rather than cosmology.

From there the film assembles its supporting case from modern anomalies rather than ancient ones. It points to the near perfect apparent match in size between the Moon and the Sun during a total eclipse, to the Moon’s unusually low density compared with Earth, to its locked rotation that keeps one face permanently turned toward us, and to the unlikely stabilising effect it has on Earth’s axial tilt and therefore on the climate that allowed complex life to develop. Each of these is presented as a coincidence too convenient to be accidental.

The Hollow Moon Question and the Apollo Seismic Record

The strongest section of the Sumerians Moon vessel documentary concerns the seismic experiments left behind by the Apollo missions. After Apollo 12, the spent ascent stage of the lunar module was deliberately crashed into the surface, and the seismometers recorded vibrations that continued for roughly an hour afterward. NASA scientists at the time described the Moon ringing like a bell, and that phrase has anchored the hollow Moon argument ever since. The idea itself predates Apollo’s later missions. In 1970 two Soviet scientists, Michael Vasin and Alexander Shcherbakov, published a paper openly asking whether the Moon was the creation of an alien intelligence.

The conventional explanation is less dramatic but well supported. The lunar interior is bone dry and heavily fractured by billions of years of impacts, and there is no water to absorb and damp seismic energy the way there is inside Earth. Waves therefore scatter and persist far longer than a terrestrial geologist would expect. The low density is likewise accounted for by the absence of a large iron core, which is precisely what the giant impact model predicts. Samples returned by Apollo are isotopically almost indistinguishable from Earth’s mantle, which is the single most important piece of evidence that the Moon was formed from our own planet rather than delivered to it.

Where Assyriologists Part Ways With the Reading

The interpretive chain this film relies on descends largely from the work of Zecharia Sitchin, who argued across a long series of books that the Anunnaki were extraterrestrial visitors from a planet called Nibiru who engineered humanity as a labour force. Specialists in Sumerian and Akkadian have consistently rejected that reading, and their objections are technical rather than dismissive. They concern how particular signs are rendered, how the word Anunnaki is constructed, and how selectively individual lines are lifted out of compositions whose surrounding context points somewhere entirely different. Scholars who read these tablets professionally hold that the Mesopotamian corpus is religious and cosmological literature, and that it can be read on its own terms without the spacecraft.

That disagreement is worth carrying into the film rather than resolving before it. The honest position is that the Sumerians genuinely used vessel imagery for the Moon, and that the leap from a river barge in a hymn to a fabricated satellite is an interpretation layered on top of the text by modern readers, not something the scribes wrote down.

Watched with that distinction held clearly in mind, this is an absorbing hour and a useful introduction to a body of literature most people have never opened.
