It sits in a small collection of galaxies called the Local Group, which sits inside a larger cluster, which sits inside a supercluster structure spanning hundreds of millions of light years. Zoom out far enough and galaxies stop looking like objects and start looking like points of light strung along filaments, with vast voids between them. That is the cosmic web, and it is the largest structural pattern we have identified.

What the Observable Universe Actually Means

The phrase observable universe does a lot of quiet work, and this film is right to spend time on it. What we can see is limited by how long light has had to reach us. Because the universe has been expanding the whole time, the current distance to the most remote light we can detect works out to tens of billions of light years, producing an observable sphere roughly ninety three billion light years across.

That is a limit on observation, not a claim about the size of everything. What lies beyond our horizon is unknown by definition. The universe may be vastly larger than the region we can survey, and it may have no edge at all.
