Most coverage of artificial intelligence is written from the outside, by people reacting to products after they ship. The Thinking Game documentary was made from the inside. It follows Demis Hassabis and the team at DeepMind across years of work, and it captures something rarer than a breakthrough, which is what the long stretch before a breakthrough actually looks like. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and tells the inside story of the artificial intelligence work that went on to win a Nobel Prize. The Great Awakening Report placed it in the Documentary Library, the curated collection built to give depth and context to subjects that move faster than public understanding of them.
Inside a Laboratory Chasing Intelligence Itself
DeepMind was never framed as a product company by the people who founded it. The stated ambition was to understand intelligence well enough to build it, and then to use it to accelerate science. That ambition explains a great deal about the film’s texture. You watch researchers arguing at whiteboards, running experiments that fail, and returning to the same problem for years with no guarantee it will yield. The Thinking Game documentary is unusually patient with this material, and that patience is the point. The public sees announcements. The film shows the several thousand unglamorous days that precede them, which is a far more accurate picture of how difficult science actually gets done.
From Games to Something That Matters
Games came first because games are tractable. They have clear rules, measurable outcomes and unlimited practice, which makes them ideal training grounds for systems that learn from experience. The lab’s early public moment came when its program defeated one of the world’s strongest players at Go, a game long considered resistant to brute force because of the enormous space of possible positions. The memorable part was not the victory but a single move the system played that human commentators initially read as an error, and that turned out to be better than anything in the human repertoire. The film treats that moment as a hinge. A machine had produced something genuinely novel rather than merely faster, and the obvious next question was what else it could be pointed at.
The Protein Problem and the Nobel Prize
The answer was one of biology’s oldest open problems. Proteins do their work by folding into precise three dimensional shapes, and for decades determining those shapes required slow, expensive laboratory techniques, leaving the structures of most known proteins unresolved. The lab’s system learned to predict those structures from sequence with an accuracy that changed what was possible in the field, and the predictions were released for researchers everywhere to use. That work earned Hassabis and his colleague John Jumper a share of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The film’s most affecting passages concern the scientists who had spent careers on single structures, watching a problem they had lived inside suddenly open up. It is a rare thing to see technological change land on real people in real time.
What the Film Asks About Intelligence and Life
Underneath the achievements the documentary keeps returning to a harder question. If a system can produce insights no human produced, what exactly is it doing, and is it the same thing we mean when we say thinking? The researchers on screen are noticeably more careful about this than the marketing that surrounds their field. They describe capability without claiming understanding, and they are candid that the internal workings of these systems are not fully transparent even to the people who build them. That honesty makes the film more credible than most treatments of the subject, and it leaves a viewer with the right kind of unease rather than a tidy conclusion.
What the Documentary Leaves at the Edge of Frame
Access has a cost, and a viewer should watch with that in mind. A film made with the cooperation of a laboratory will tend to tell the version of the story that laboratory recognizes. The harder questions about concentrated capability, about the commercial pressures on a research lab owned by one of the largest companies on earth, about labor displacement and about who decides how these systems are deployed receive far less screen time than the science. Critics of the genre reasonably call this kind of filmmaking a sympathetic portrait. The counterweight is that the science shown is real, the protein work genuinely helped researchers worldwide, and a sympathetic portrait with access still contains information no outside account can reach.
Why It Belongs in the Library
Watch this one to replace speculation with observation. Whatever you conclude about where artificial intelligence is heading, the conclusion improves when you have seen the people building it, heard how they describe their own uncertainty, and understood what an actual breakthrough required. The Thinking Game documentary is among the most useful hours available on that subject for a general viewer. It was featured in the MONTHLY REPORT • June 2026 • Volume IX • Chapter VI and sits alongside the rest of the collection in the MUST WATCH Documentary Library.
