The Three Gorges Dam did exactly what it was built to do. That is the uncomfortable premise this Three Gorges Dam documentary begins from, and it is what makes the film more interesting than the usual megaproject critique. The Yangtze floods that killed enormous numbers of people across the twentieth century have been brought under control. The dam works. The film’s argument is that the bill for that success is being paid somewhere else entirely, roughly a thousand miles downstream, along a coastline that is quietly coming apart.
What the film examines
The documentary follows a single physical process from the mountains to the sea. It starts with why the dam was built, establishes that it succeeded on its own terms, and then traces what happens to a river system when you place a structure of that size across it. The narrative device is effective because it refuses the easy framing. Nobody in this story is a villain. Engineers solved a real and lethal problem, and the solution had consequences that operate on a timescale no political cycle can see.
This is fundamentally a film about sediment, which sounds unpromising and turns out to be one of the more consequential subjects in earth science. Deltas and coastlines are not permanent features. They are balances between material arriving and material being removed, and they only look solid because the two sides of the ledger have historically matched.
The problem the dam was built to solve
The Yangtze flood record is genuinely horrifying. The 1931 floods rank among the deadliest natural disasters in recorded human history, and the 1954 floods killed tens of thousands more and displaced millions. Flood control on this river was not a vanity project. It was a response to a recurring catastrophe that had shaped Chinese history for centuries.
Construction began in 1994, the reservoir began filling in 2003, and the facility reached full operation around 2012. It is the largest power station in the world by installed capacity, generating an enormous quantity of electricity without burning coal. It also displaced roughly 1.3 million people, submerged towns, farmland and archaeological sites, and created a reservoir stretching hundreds of miles upstream. The film gives that cost its due before moving on to the one nobody accounted for.
The sediment ledger
A river is not only water. The Yangtze historically carried a vast load of silt and sand scoured from the interior of China and delivered it to the East China Sea. That material built the Yangtze delta over thousands of years and continuously replenished it against the ordinary forces of waves, tides and subsidence.
A reservoir stops that. Water slows when it enters still water, and slow water cannot hold sediment in suspension, so the sediment falls out behind the dam. Measurements of sediment discharge in the lower Yangtze show a dramatic decline following impoundment, with the load reaching the sea falling to a fraction of its historical level. The material is not gone. It is sitting at the bottom of the reservoir, which creates its own long term problem for the dam’s storage capacity.
This is not a novel or speculative effect. It is the best documented consequence of large dam construction anywhere in the world, and the clearest precedent is the Aswan High Dam, after which the Nile Delta began eroding and has continued to do so for decades.
What is happening at the coast
The downstream consequences arrive slowly and then become difficult to reverse. Without replenishment, the delta front erodes, and shorelines that had been advancing seaward begin retreating. Coastal wetlands that depend on sediment accretion start losing ground. Land subsides, because deltas naturally compact under their own weight and only stay level when fresh material arrives on top.
The most consequential effect concerns salt. As the delta erodes and freshwater outflow patterns change, seawater pushes further up the estuary, threatening the freshwater intakes that supply Shanghai and the surrounding region, one of the densest concentrations of people and industry on earth. Add global sea level rise to a subsiding and eroding delta and the arithmetic becomes genuinely serious.
The film also covers ecological effects in the river itself, including disrupted migration for species that moved up and down the Yangtze. Here it is worth being careful about attribution. The Yangtze river dolphin was declared functionally extinct after a 2006 survey found none, but researchers attribute that loss to a combination of pressures including fishing practices, heavy shipping traffic and pollution, not to the dam alone.
Why it is worth watching
Watch this Three Gorges Dam documentary for the way it handles tradeoffs. Chinese authorities have taken measures to address sediment management, and defenders of the project point out correctly that the flood protection and the carbon free generation are real benefits measured in lives and emissions. The critique in the film is not that the dam should not exist. It is that the accounting was incomplete, because the costs land in a different place and on a different timescale than the benefits.
That pattern is the real subject, and it extends well past one river. Large infrastructure solves the problem in front of it and exports a slower problem downstream, where it accumulates quietly until it becomes someone else’s emergency. The Yangtze is simply the largest and clearest example currently running.
