Millions of people take a psychiatric medication every day without ever having been told what happens when they try to stop. That gap, between what patients were promised and what they eventually discover, is the subject of this Big Pharma documentary. The film examines physical dependence on commonly prescribed psychiatric drugs, and argues that the companies producing them understood the risks of long term use and withdrawal far earlier and far more completely than they disclosed to either prescribing physicians or the people swallowing the pills.
Dependence is not the same as addiction
The film spends real effort on a distinction that has caused enormous confusion, and getting it right is essential to following the argument. Addiction involves compulsive seeking, escalating use and craving. Physical dependence means the body has adapted to a substance’s continuous presence and responds badly when it is removed. A patient can be entirely dependent on a medication while taking exactly the prescribed dose, never craving it, and never misusing it in any way.
For decades that distinction was used to reassure patients that a given drug was not habit forming, which was technically accurate regarding addiction and deeply misleading regarding what would happen on discontinuation. The documentary argues this was not accidental imprecision. It was language selected because it was defensible while creating a false impression.
What the withdrawal experience actually looks like
The strongest material in the film comes from patients describing discontinuation. The symptoms they report include severe anxiety far exceeding anything that preceded treatment, insomnia, sensory disturbances, cognitive difficulty and physical symptoms that were frequently interpreted by clinicians as proof the original condition had returned. That interpretive error is central to the film’s case. A patient in withdrawal who is told their illness has relapsed is placed back on the medication, the symptoms resolve, and the episode is recorded as confirmation that the drug was necessary all along.
The film also addresses duration. Standard guidance long described discontinuation effects as mild and resolving within roughly two weeks, while many patients report difficulties lasting months or longer. Official positions have since shifted in this direction. A major review by Public Health England in 2019 examined dependence on prescribed medicines and found the scale of long term prescribing considerably larger than expected, and guidance from British psychiatric bodies was subsequently revised to acknowledge that withdrawal can be severe and protracted for some patients.
How the evidence base was shaped
Beyond individual drugs, the Big Pharma documentary examines the machinery that determines what doctors know. Its concerns here are well documented in the medical literature. Trials funded by manufacturers historically produced favorable results at rates exceeding independently funded trials. Negative results went unpublished at a substantially higher rate than positive ones, a problem serious enough that trial pre registration was introduced specifically to address it. Studies typically ran for weeks while the medications were prescribed for years, meaning that the evidence for long term use was thinner than the prescribing pattern implied. Industry funding of continuing medical education, professional societies and patient advocacy organizations shaped the surrounding environment as well.
The necessary counterweight
Balance is essential here and the film does not supply much of it, so it needs stating directly. Psychiatric medications provide genuine and sometimes life saving benefit to a great many people. Untreated severe depression, bipolar disorder and psychosis carry serious risks including death. The existence of withdrawal difficulty does not establish that a drug lacks efficacy, and a documentary that leads a viewer toward that conclusion has overreached.
The practical point matters most. Abruptly stopping a psychiatric medication can be dangerous, and in some cases more dangerous than continuing it. Anyone this film prompts to reconsider their prescription should take that question to a physician and plan a supervised taper rather than acting alone. The useful outcome of watching is a better conversation with a doctor, not a decision made without one.
Why it is worth watching
The durable value of this Big Pharma documentary is that it equips viewers to ask sharper questions. What is the evidence for taking this beyond a few months. What does stopping involve. What is the tapering plan. Who funded the studies that established this drug’s profile. Those questions are reasonable, they are answerable, and patients who ask them tend to receive better care. The film is at its most credible when it stays with patient experience and the documented history of the evidence base, and viewers are best served by weighting those sections most heavily.
This film was featured in the MONTHLY REPORT April 2026 Volume IX Chapter IV, and it belongs to the MUST WATCH Documentary Library, where health related films are offered as resources for informed reflection rather than as medical advice.
