Few countries illustrate the gap between natural wealth and lived reality as sharply as Venezuela. This Crisis in Venezuela documentary from the FRONTLINE investigative series steps into a nation that sits on the largest proven oil reserves on earth and yet has watched its currency evaporate, its hospitals empty out and millions of its citizens walk across borders carrying what they could fit in a bag. The film is built around a single hard question. After years of sanctions, disputed elections, shortages and political deadlock, what actually comes next for the people who live there.
What the Crisis in Venezuela documentary sets out to examine
The film treats Venezuela not as a headline but as a system under strain, and it follows that strain through the institutions that hold a country together. Oil revenue, the currency, the electrical grid, the food supply, the hospitals, the courts and the ballot box all appear here as parts of one machine that stopped working in sequence rather than all at once. That structure matters. Collapse of this kind is rarely a single catastrophic event. It is a long accumulation of decisions, each of which looked survivable on its own.
Framed around the question of what follows the removal of Nicolas Maduro from power, the documentary presents the present moment as an opening rather than a conclusion. It asks who fills the space, what institutions remain functional enough to govern through a transition, and whether the population has the patience and the resources for another period of uncertainty after so many years of it.
How an oil rich nation ran aground
Venezuela’s modern story runs through petroleum. Oil built the modern Venezuelan state, funded its social programs and shaped its politics for decades. Hugo Chavez, who led the country from 1999 until his death in 2013, redirected a great deal of that revenue toward social spending and nationalized large parts of the energy sector. When prices were high, the arrangement held. When prices fell and production declined, the revenue that the entire structure rested on fell away with it.
Nicolas Maduro inherited that arrangement and the shortfall that came with it. What followed became one of the most severe peacetime economic contractions in modern history. Hyperinflation rendered the bolivar effectively worthless, wiping out savings and wages. Price controls and currency controls produced shortages of basic goods. Imported medicine became scarce. Electrical service grew unreliable in a country that had built its infrastructure on the assumption of abundant energy.
The exodus and the human cost
The most visible consequence appears at the borders. More than seven million Venezuelans have left the country, one of the largest displacement crises anywhere in the world and one that has reshaped Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Chile and the movement of people through Central America toward the United States. The documentary keeps returning to this because it is the clearest measure of what the numbers actually mean. Inflation figures are abstract. A family deciding that walking out is safer than staying is not.
This is also where the film is at its strongest. It gives room to Venezuelans describing their own circumstances rather than filtering the country entirely through the statements of officials and analysts. The result is a portrait of people who have become expert at improvising survival, and who have grown deeply skeptical of every political actor promising them relief.
Contested ground, sanctions and the question of intervention
Venezuela is one of the most fiercely disputed subjects in hemispheric politics, and this Crisis in Venezuela documentary lands in the middle of that dispute. One reading holds that the collapse was self inflicted, the predictable outcome of expropriation, price controls, mismanagement of the state oil company and the hollowing out of independent institutions. A competing reading holds that United States sanctions, which tightened sharply from 2019 onward and targeted the state oil company directly, turned a serious crisis into a catastrophic one by cutting the country off from the revenue and credit it needed to recover.
Both readings contain evidence, and honest observers disagree about how the weight should be distributed. The same is true of the political question. The 2024 presidential election was widely disputed, with the opposition and numerous foreign governments rejecting the official result. Whether external pressure on Caracas represents legitimate support for a population denied a fair vote, or an intervention in the affairs of a sovereign state with obvious interest in its oil, remains genuinely contested. The film does not resolve this, and viewers should not expect it to.
Why this one is worth watching
The value here is in the sequence. Watching how a country with enormous resources arrives at empty pharmacy shelves teaches something that no summary of the situation can, because the lesson lives in the order the pieces failed. Currency policy, energy policy, institutional independence and the rule of law are not separate topics in this story. They are the same topic viewed from different angles, and Venezuela shows what happens when several of them give way at once.
Watch it for the reporting, and watch it with the awareness that the framing of who is responsible is still being argued over by serious people on every side. The questions it raises about resource wealth, currency stability, sanctions as an instrument of policy and the fragility of institutions extend well beyond one country in South America.
