The Singularity Event documentary is built around a 1998 interview with Terence McKenna filmed by John Hazard, and it lands strangely in the present tense. McKenna is sitting in front of a camera in the last years of his life describing an accelerating process he believed was carrying human culture toward a transition it could neither stop nor comprehend in advance. Watching it now, with artificial intelligence reshaping work in real time and information moving faster than any institution can process it, the interview reads less like a period piece and more like a letter that arrived late.

The Interview at the Heart of the Film

This is a conversation piece rather than a conventional documentary, and it is stronger for it. There is no narrator explaining McKenna to the viewer and no montage softening his arguments. He simply talks, and he was among the most fluent extemporaneous speakers of his generation, capable of holding a complex idea across ten minutes without notes and without losing the thread.

What comes through is a particular way of seeing history. McKenna did not treat the modern world as an unusually eventful stretch of an otherwise steady timeline. He argued that the rate of change itself was changing, that each era compresses developments which took the previous era far longer, and that a curve shaped like that has an endpoint rather than a plateau. The interview is him working through what that endpoint might feel like from inside.

Novelty Theory and the Timewave

The framework underneath all of this is what McKenna called Novelty Theory. His claim was that the universe has a tendency not toward disorder but toward the production of novelty, meaning increasingly complex and interconnected arrangements, and that this tendency accelerates. Atoms, then chemistry, then life, then nervous systems, then language, then cities, then electronics, each stage arriving faster than the one before it.

He attempted to formalise this as a mathematical model he called Timewave Zero, derived from the King Wen sequence of hexagrams in the I Ching. The resulting wave was meant to chart the ebb and flow of novelty across history, and when he fitted it to the historical record it converged on a point of infinite novelty which he placed in December 2012. In this interview he is describing that convergence as the eschaton, a transcendental object at the end of time exerting a kind of pull backward through history, drawing events toward it.

What Arrived and What Did Not

Honesty requires stating the obvious. December 2012 came and went and nothing resembling a singularity occurred. The specific date failed, and the mathematics behind Timewave Zero drew serious criticism from people who examined the derivation closely, including the way the original data set was constructed and adjusted. McKenna himself was inconsistent about how literally the date should be taken, at times defending it and at other times treating the whole construction as a useful metaphor. A viewer should not come away from the Singularity Event documentary believing the model was validated, because it was not.

The broader description has aged considerably better. McKenna talked in 1998 about culture dissolving into media, about the collapse of shared consensus reality, about technology folding inward into mind, and about a coming moment when human beings would build something that outstripped their ability to predict it. He described the internet as a nervous system growing over the planet at a time when most households were still on dial up. He argued that ideology was becoming unstable because information was becoming too abundant to curate. Set against the last decade, those observations do not sound like the 1990s.

The Wider McKenna Project

Context helps here. McKenna was an ethnobotanist and writer who spent years in the Amazon, and his books include Food of the Gods and The Archaic Revival. He advanced the argument that psychoactive plants played a role in the development of human cognition and language, a proposal that remains outside mainstream anthropology but has never quite gone away. He spoke constantly about what he called the archaic revival, the idea that a culture in crisis reaches back for older ways of knowing, and that the resurgence of shamanic practice, ritual and direct experience was a symptom of exactly that.

He died in 2000, two years after this interview was recorded, which gives the footage its particular weight. He never saw the smartphone, the social platforms, the large language model or the date his own model pointed to. He is describing the shape of something he would not live to watch arrive.

Why This Film Is Worth Watching

Take the Singularity Event documentary as a way of thinking rather than a prophecy, and it becomes genuinely valuable. The discipline it teaches is to look at the rate of change instead of the events, to ask what a curve implies rather than what a headline says, and to sit with the possibility that the near future is not an extension of the present but a discontinuity with it.

That question is no longer speculative. The technologies McKenna could only gesture toward are now being built, and the people building them use a vocabulary very close to his. Whether or not you accept a word of the Timewave, watching a man in 1998 describe the texture of a transition we now appear to be living through is an hour well spent.
