What the New Data Shows

Direct measurement of AMOC strength began in 2004 with a moored instrument array stretched across the Atlantic at roughly 26 degrees north. Two decades of continuous data is a short record for a system with natural variability on decadal timescales, and this is the honest limit on what direct observation can currently prove.

Researchers have therefore worked with proxies. Reconstructions based on sediment cores, deep sea coral and ocean temperature patterns have indicated that the circulation is now weaker than at any point in roughly the last thousand years. That study drew substantial methodological criticism from other oceanographers, who argued that the proxy and the statistical approach could not support a date range of that precision.

The assessed mainstream position, as set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is that AMOC will very likely weaken over this century, while an abrupt collapse before 2100 is judged unlikely with medium confidence. A number of researchers argue that this assessment is too conservative given the freshwater input models have historically underestimated. The genuine scientific disagreement is about timing and probability, not about direction.
