State Street | The $57 Trillion Financial Monster

Behind the unremarkable name and the quiet corporate facade sits one of the most consequential institutions in global finance, and the State Street documentary exists to explain why almost nobody outside the industry has heard of it. This is a company that safeguards and moves tens of trillions of dollars, that sits underneath a very large share of the world’s pension funds, sovereign wealth and index investing, and that shapes market outcomes from a position most people never think to look at. The film treats that invisibility as the story rather than an accident.

What the State Street Documentary Uncovers

The film’s argument is that real financial power in the modern era does not look like a trading floor. It looks like infrastructure. Investment banks generate headlines and hedge funds generate personalities, while the institutions that actually hold the assets, settle the trades, keep the records and cast the votes operate with almost no public profile at all. That is the machinery this documentary sets out to describe, and State Street is one of the clearest examples of it.

The headline figure in the title refers to the scale of assets flowing through the firm’s custody and administration business. The film uses it the way it should be used, as a measure of how much of the financial system passes across one set of books, rather than as a claim about ownership. Understanding that distinction is most of what you need to evaluate everything else the film argues.

What a Custodian Bank Actually Does

Custody is the least glamorous and most structurally important job in finance. A custodian bank holds securities on behalf of institutional clients, pension funds, insurers, endowments, sovereign funds and asset managers. It settles trades, collects dividends, handles corporate actions, keeps the official record of who owns what, and provides the accounting that the whole system relies on to know its own position.

State Street, founded in Boston with roots stretching back to the late eighteenth century, grew into one of the small handful of institutions capable of doing this at global scale. There are very few genuine competitors, because the operational and regulatory requirements make the business almost impossible to enter. That concentration is the first source of the influence the film describes. When a tiny number of firms provide the plumbing for the entire system, their operational decisions, fee structures and risk models propagate everywhere at once.

From Custodian to Index Giant

The second source of influence is different in kind. State Street Global Advisors, the firm’s asset management arm, launched the first exchange traded fund listed in the United States in 1993, tracking the S&P 500. That product opened the door to a structural shift in how the world invests. Over the following three decades, money moved steadily out of active stock picking and into cheap index tracking funds, and the firms running those funds accumulated shareholdings on a scale nobody had anticipated.

State Street, BlackRock and Vanguard are now commonly described as the Big Three. Between them they manage index funds holding significant stakes in effectively every large public company in the United States. They do not own those shares in the ordinary sense, because the economic exposure belongs to the fund investors. What they do control is the vote attached to them, exercised through their stewardship teams at shareholder meetings on executive pay, board composition and corporate policy.

The Argument Over Concentrated Voting Power

This is where serious disagreement begins, and the State Street documentary is at its strongest when it lays the two positions side by side. Academic work on what has been called the problem of the giant three argues that concentrating voting rights over most of the public equity market into three stewardship departments creates a governance structure with no precedent, one where a small number of unelected professionals influence decisions across thousands of competing companies at once. Related research on common ownership asks whether firms in the same industry compete as hard when the same shareholders hold large positions in all of them.

The defence is substantive too. Index managers are passive by construction, cannot sell a company’s shares while it remains in the index, and have no economic stake of their own in any outcome. They argue that their stewardship is limited, procedural, and directed toward long term value for the ordinary savers whose money they hold. Both positions are held by credible people, and the film presents the concentration as a structural question rather than a conspiracy.

Why This Documentary Is Worth Watching

Most financial journalism covers price movements. Very little of it covers architecture. What makes this film useful is that it goes after the layer underneath the news, the systems that determine how capital is held, recorded and voted, and it explains that layer in language that does not require a finance background. Once you can see custody and index stewardship clearly, a great deal of otherwise puzzling market behaviour becomes legible.

Watch it with the ownership distinction firmly in mind, separate the custody figure from the equity stakes, and pay attention to where the film is describing documented structure and where it is drawing an inference. The machinery it describes is real, consequential, and almost entirely absent from public discussion.
