This Sumerian civilization documentary is a long form run through the whole arc, from the first mud brick villages on the southern Mesopotamian floodplain to the collapse of the last Sumerian state, and it is the kind of film that rewards a full sitting rather than a skim. Sumer is not simply one ancient culture among many. It is the culture where the written record of the human race begins, which means every civilization studied afterward gets examined with tools that Sumerians invented. If you have ever wondered why the deep past feels like it starts abruptly, this is the answer. It starts here because this is where people first started writing things down.
What this Sumerian civilization documentary covers
The film is structured as a chronology rather than a set of themes, which suits the material. It opens in the prehistoric south, where scattered farming settlements of the Ubaid period sat on the alluvium between the Tigris and the Euphrates, and it follows the compression of those villages into the first true cities during the Uruk period of roughly 4000 to 3100 BCE. From there it moves through the Early Dynastic centuries of competing city states, the Akkadian conquest, the collapse that followed, the Neo Sumerian revival under the Third Dynasty of Ur, and the final extinction of Sumerian political power. Along the way it covers religion, kingship, warfare, trade, law and daily life.
What distinguishes a good Sumerian civilization documentary from a bad one is whether it treats Sumer as a static block or as something that changed enormously across three thousand years. This one does the latter. The Sumer of Eridu’s earliest shrine and the Sumer of Shulgi’s bureaucratic empire are separated by more time than separates us from the Roman Republic.
From Eridu to the rival city states
Sumerian tradition held that kingship first descended at Eridu, and Eridu does in fact contain one of the oldest continuously rebuilt temple sequences known, a small shrine replaced again and again on the same spot over millennia. Whether or not it was literally first, the pattern it shows is the Sumerian pattern. The temple comes first, the city grows around it, and the god owns the land.
By the Early Dynastic period the south held a set of independent and frequently hostile city states. Ur, Uruk, Lagash, Umma, Nippur, Kish and others each had a patron deity, a walled center, irrigated fields and a ruler whose legitimacy came from the temple. They fought constantly, most famously the long border war between Lagash and Umma, which produced some of the earliest recorded treaties and some of the earliest recorded propaganda. Nippur, sacred to Enlil, functioned as a religious capital that no single city could own outright, which is how a fractured political landscape held a shared identity together.
The inventions that outlived Sumer
The practical legacy is difficult to overstate. Cuneiform writing began as administrative accounting and grew into a script capable of carrying law, poetry, prophecy, mathematics and correspondence across multiple languages for three thousand years. The Sumerians worked in a sexagesimal system built on sixty, and that choice is still sitting on your wrist and in every circle you measure, because sixty minutes in an hour and three hundred and sixty degrees in a circle come down to us directly from Mesopotamian arithmetic.
Add to that monumental mud brick architecture and the ziggurat form, large scale canal irrigation, the potter’s wheel and wheeled vehicles, the plow, standardized weights and measures, cylinder seals as a system of signature and security, and schools for scribes with surviving homework. The Code of Ur Nammu, produced under the Third Dynasty of Ur, is among the oldest law codes recovered anywhere, and it predates Hammurabi’s far more famous stele by roughly three centuries.
Empire, collapse and the last Sumerian renaissance
Around 2334 BCE, by the conventional chronology, Sargon of Akkad conquered the Sumerian south and built the first empire in recorded history, ruling a territory rather than a city. Akkadian, a Semitic language, became the administrative tongue, and the long bilingual period of Mesopotamian history began. The Akkadian empire fell after roughly a century and a half, in circumstances the film treats seriously, with the Gutian incursions in the traditional account and a severe regional drought in the reconstruction favored by many modern researchers.
What followed is the part most casual histories skip. Under Ur Nammu and his son Shulgi the Third Dynasty of Ur rebuilt a centralized Sumerian state of extraordinary administrative density, generating tens of thousands of accounting tablets that survive today and give us an unmatched view of an ancient economy. It lasted about a century before falling to Elamite attack and internal strain around 2004 BCE. After that, Sumerian survived as a liturgical and scholarly language, studied by scribes who spoke Akkadian at home, rather like Latin in medieval Europe. The people did not vanish. The political identity did.
The Anunnaki question and why this film is worth watching
Any serious Sumerian civilization documentary eventually runs into the Anunnaki, and this one addresses the texts directly. In the Sumerian and later Akkadian material the Anunnaki are a category of gods, offspring of An, who decree fates and hold divine authority. A separate popular tradition, most associated with the writings of Zecharia Sitchin from the mid nineteen seventies onward, reads them instead as physical visitors from another world who engineered humanity as a labor force. That reading has been rejected by professional Assyriologists, who dispute both the translations it rests on and the astronomical claims built on top of them. The mainstream position is that the texts are religious literature and read coherently as such.
The film is worth watching precisely because it gives you the primary framework before anyone’s interpretation of it. Once you know the chronology, the cities, the languages and what the tablets actually say, you are equipped to evaluate every stranger claim made about Sumer on its own merits instead of taking it on trust. That is the most valuable thing a survey like this can hand you.
