Al Nahyans | The Family That Built the UAE

A century ago the coastline that is now Abu Dhabi supported a population living on pearl diving, fishing, date cultivation and seasonal movement between the coast and the inland oases. Today the same territory anchors one of the largest concentrations of investable capital on earth. This Al Nahyan family documentary follows that transformation through the ruling household that presided over it, and it does something most Gulf profiles avoid: it starts well before the oil, in a period when the family’s main problem was surviving its own succession disputes.

Before the Oil: A Tribal Confederation on the Gulf Coast

The Al Nahyan emerged as the leading house of the Bani Yas, a confederation of tribes whose territory spanned the desert interior and the coast of what is now the western United Arab Emirates. Authority in that setting was negotiated rather than inherited automatically. A ruler held position through the consent of allied tribal leaders, control of water and trade access, and the ability to protect people from raiding.

The film is good on this point. It shows that the structures which later made rapid modernization possible, tight family control, personal loyalty networks and centralized decision making, were not designed in the twentieth century. They were inherited from a desert political order in which those things were the difference between a house holding power and losing it.

The Oath That Ended the Killing

The documentary treats 1928 as the hinge. According to its account, the family had by then spent decades consuming itself, with brothers and cousins seizing power by force and being removed the same way. The agreement the film calls the Oath of Salama is presented as a binding internal settlement that put an end to fratricidal succession and imposed a rule that disputes within the household would not be resolved by killing.

Whether or not you accept the specific framing, the underlying point is historically sound and worth sitting with. Dynasties that solve the succession problem survive, and those that do not tend to fragment. The film argues that this internal peace, more than any resource, is what allowed the Al Nahyan to be intact and unified at the exact moment that oil revenue arrived. Continuity was the precondition, not the consequence.

Zayed, Oil, and the Founding of a Federation

Commercial oil was found in Abu Dhabi in the late 1950s and exports began in the early 1960s, but the revenue was initially used cautiously and to limited developmental effect. In 1966 Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan replaced his brother Shakhbut as ruler of Abu Dhabi in a transition handled without bloodshed, consistent with the settlement the film describes.

Zayed then did two things that define the modern state. He spent oil income aggressively on infrastructure, housing, schooling and health care rather than accumulating it, and he pushed for federation with the neighbouring emirates as Britain withdrew from the Gulf. The United Arab Emirates was established on 2 December 1971 with Zayed as its first president, a position he held until his death in 2004. Power passed to his son Khalifa, and after Khalifa’s death in 2022 to Mohamed bin Zayed.

The title points at the family’s scale, and this is where precision matters. The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority was created in 1976 to convert finite hydrocarbon income into a permanent diversified portfolio, and it sits alongside Mubadala and ADQ as one of several state investment vehicles holding assets across global equities, real estate, infrastructure, semiconductors, logistics and artificial intelligence.

These are sovereign institutions rather than personal bank accounts, which is a distinction the trillionaire framing tends to blur. The substantive question the film raises is subtler and more interesting than a net worth figure: in a system where the ruling family holds the presidency, chairs the major funds and sets investment strategy, how much daylight actually exists between the state’s capital and the household’s? Critics of the Gulf model argue very little, and also raise the treatment of migrant labour and the absence of electoral accountability. Supporters point to living standards, stability and a diversification record that most resource economies have failed to match. Both readings are defensible and the film gives more room to the second.

Why It Is Worth Watching

This Al Nahyan family documentary works best as a study in how dynastic power converts one form of advantage into another, from tribal authority to oil rent to sovereign capital to geopolitical leverage. Each conversion preserved the family’s position while changing the source of it entirely. For anyone tracking how concentrated wealth becomes durable across generations, the Gulf offers the clearest working example of the process, compressed into a single lifetime and still visibly in motion.
