Deflection moved from theory to demonstrated capability in 2022, when the DART spacecraft struck the small moon Dimorphos and measurably shortened its orbital period. That mission proved a kinetic impactor can alter an asteroid’s path. What it did not prove is that the approach works against a larger body, or on the short notice that a late detection would allow. Warning time remains the binding constraint, and warning time is a function of how much sky is being watched and how well.
