The Pathless Path documentary opens with a statement that sounds like a riddle and turns out to be the whole argument. The path is you, and every obstacle on the path is you. Continuing the Samadhi series, this film addresses the peculiar problem at the centre of all contemplative work. If what you are seeking is what you already are, then movement toward it is the one thing guaranteed not to help, and the ordinary machinery of goals, methods and progress stops functioning.

Truth as a Pathless Land

The title carries an inheritance worth knowing. In 1929 Jiddu Krishnamurti stood before an organisation built around him, with thousands of followers who believed him to be a coming world teacher, and dissolved it. His reason was that truth is a pathless land, that it cannot be approached through any organisation, creed, dogma, priest or ritual, and that the moment you organise a path to it you have created something that can only obstruct.

That refusal sits underneath this film. Paths imply distance, and distance implies that the destination is elsewhere. Every tradition that takes non duality seriously eventually runs into the same wall. The seeker cannot arrive at the sought, because the separation between them is the illusion being investigated. What the film is describing is not a journey with stages but a recognition that can only occur where the journey is abandoned.

The Path Is You, and So Is Every Obstacle

This is where the film becomes practical in an unexpected way. If the obstacles are not external, then the resistance, boredom, doubt, restlessness and self justification that arise during contemplative practice are not interruptions of the work. They are the work, presenting itself for inspection.

The ordinary instinct is to treat these as failures and to push through them toward a calmer state. The film suggests the opposite. Every avoidance reveals the shape of the structure being defended, and the structure being defended is the constructed self. Seen that way, the difficulty is information. It shows you precisely where identification is strongest, which is exactly what you set out to find.

The Trap of Spiritual Seeking

The most useful section concerns what happens when the seeking itself becomes the problem. Chögyam Trungpa gave this the name spiritual materialism, and it describes the process by which practice, insight and attainment get collected as possessions by the very self they were meant to dissolve. A person acquires techniques, retreats, vocabulary and experiences, and the ego emerges from the process considerably better decorated and entirely intact.

Zen addressed the same danger with characteristic bluntness in the instruction that if you meet the Buddha on the road, you should kill him. The meaning is not irreverent. Any image of enlightenment you are carrying is a product of the mind that constructed it, and holding onto it guarantees you will be looking in the wrong direction. The Pathless Path documentary applies this to the modern spiritual landscape, where an enormous market has grown up around practices that were originally designed to leave the seeker with nothing to hold.

Stripping Away Rather Than Adding

The film’s central image is subtraction. Where almost everything in modern life is framed as acquisition, of skills, credentials, possessions and improved versions of oneself, the approach described here moves the other way. Nothing is gained. Layers of assumption, identification and inherited description are removed until what was underneath becomes evident.

Samadhi, the word that names this series, comes from the yogic tradition as the final limb of Patanjali’s eightfold path, a state of absorption in which the division between the one observing and the thing observed no longer operates. The tradition is consistent that it cannot be manufactured by effort, and equally consistent that people who make no effort do not arrive there either. That paradox is not resolved in this film, and the honest reading is that it is not resolvable in words. It is the kind of thing the koan tradition was built to handle, by exhausting the thinking mind rather than satisfying it.

Why This Film Is Worth Watching

What makes this worth an hour is that it is a genuine corrective. Anyone some distance into this territory will recognise the traps it names, particularly the accumulation of spiritual knowledge as a substitute for actually looking. The film also offers something quietly reassuring for anyone who has felt they were failing at practice, which is that the difficulty was never an obstruction on the road.

Approach it as contemplation rather than instruction. It will not give you a method, and by its own logic it cannot. What it offers is a sustained invitation to stop reaching, sit still, and examine the one doing the reaching.
