The Bible Most Christians Never Read | Documentary

This Ethiopian Bible documentary walks through a scripture that most Western Christians have never opened and many do not know exists. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church preserves the broadest biblical canon in Christianity, and it contains books that other traditions set aside centuries ago. The film moves through that collection in order, beginning with Henok, known elsewhere as the Book of Enoch, continuing to Kufale, the Book of Jubilees, and ending with the Three Meqabyan.

A canon that kept what others let go

Ethiopian Christianity is old. The faith took root in the Kingdom of Axum in the fourth century, well before large parts of Europe were Christian, and it developed with a degree of independence from both Rome and Constantinople. Its scriptures are preserved in Ge’ez, an ancient Ethiopic language still used liturgically. That combination of early adoption and relative isolation produced a canon that never went through the same rounds of narrowing that shaped the Western Bible.

The practical result is a collection substantially larger than the Protestant or Catholic canon. Some of its additional books circulated widely in the ancient world and were later dropped. Others are unique to the Ethiopian tradition and have no counterpart anywhere else. The Ethiopian Bible documentary treats this not as a curiosity but as a question of transmission: what survived, where, and why the geography of preservation determined which texts a believer today has access to.

Henok and the Watchers

The Book of Enoch is the most consequential text in the collection, and for centuries the complete version survived only in Ge’ez. Western scholarship had access to nothing more than quotations and fragments until Ethiopian manuscripts reached Europe. Fragments in Aramaic later turned up among the Dead Sea Scrolls, confirming that the work was in circulation well before the Christian era and was read seriously by Jewish communities of the period.

Its content explains why it was both influential and uncomfortable. The Book of the Watchers describes a group of heavenly beings who descend, take human wives, and teach humanity metallurgy, weaponry, cosmetics and forbidden knowledge, producing offspring who devastate the earth and bringing on the judgment of the flood. Other sections contain visionary journeys, a detailed astronomical and calendrical treatise, and passages concerning a coming figure described as the Son of Man. The New Testament letter of Jude quotes Enoch directly and by name, which means the text was known and treated as authoritative by at least some of the earliest Christian writers.

Kufale and a different shape of time

Jubilees, called Kufale in the Ethiopian tradition, retells the narrative from creation through the giving of the law, but organized into periods of seven times seven years. That structure is the book’s whole argument. It presents sacred history as running on a fixed and countable schedule rather than unfolding arbitrarily, with events falling at their appointed positions in a larger cycle.

The calendrical material is equally pointed. Jubilees advocates a solar reckoning in which the year runs in fixed quarters and festivals fall on the same days annually, a system incompatible with the lunar based calendar that became standard. Hebrew copies of Jubilees were also found at Qumran, placing it firmly in the same ancient stream as Enoch and indicating that the calendar question it addresses was a live dispute rather than an eccentricity.

The Three Meqabyan and the rest of the collection

The Meqabyan books are where the Ethiopian canon becomes genuinely unique. Despite a name that resembles Maccabees, these three books are distinct works with different content, preserved in the Ethiopian tradition and not found in the Greek collections that supplied other canons. They address martyrdom, faithfulness under a hostile ruler, and divine justice, and they are almost entirely unknown outside Ethiopia.

The wider canon holds further material still, including additional wisdom writings, expanded versions of books that appear elsewhere in shorter form, and historical works that Western traditions never treated as scriptural. Ethiopia also preserves some of the oldest surviving illuminated Christian manuscripts in existence, which makes the tradition significant as a physical archive as much as a theological one.

What to make of it

A measured note belongs here. Mainstream scholarship regards Enoch and Jubilees as pseudepigraphal, meaning attributed to ancient figures but composed considerably later than the events they describe, generally placed in the centuries immediately before the Christian era. The traditions that excluded them did so through debate and decision rather than by accident, and they gave reasons. None of that diminishes the historical importance of the texts or the fact that early Christian and Jewish communities read them, and the Ethiopian Bible documentary is at its best when it lets the books speak rather than arguing about their status.
