VENEZUELA CRISIS, BARR NO-SHOW FOR CONGRESSIONAL HEARING, NOTRE DAME FIRE INVESTIGATIONS, US BORDER UNDER SIEGE

Violence has once again broken out on the streets of Venezuela – what has happened to the country, politically and economically, to cause such anger and division?  The sun hadn’t yet risen but Venezuelans were wide awake.  A little before ‪6am on Tuesday, Juan Guaidó went live via social media from outside La Carlota military base in Caracas to call the country to action.  “The moment is now,” said the opposition leader, flanked by members of the security forces. “The first of May begins now,” referring to a large anti-government demonstration planned for the following day.

It was a risky move but in the end neither one thing nor the other: the uprising didn’t unseat Mr. Maduro or necessarily weaken his grip on power – and whatever Mr Guaidó hoped the day would bring clearly didn’t come to pass, either.  We feature more links and information on the Venezuela crisis below.

House Democrats insisting on using staff lawyers to question Attorney General William Barr during a since-scuttled hearing appearance looked “like a bit of a stunt,” according to Fox News anchor Chris Wallace.  “This is Bill Barr, who was doing nothing but talking about a report which he read which he had nothing to do with,” Wallace said on “America’s Newsroom.” “So the idea that you would need to get counsel to drill down on the Mueller report with the attorney general who just received the report and forwarded it on to Congress, I have to say it does sound and seem and look like a bit of a stunt.”

Wallace was referring to efforts to have staffers — and not just sitting members of Congress — question Barr at a House hearing Thursday regarding his handling of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on the Trump-Russia investigation.  Barr objected to the terms and did not show up.  Democrats were outraged, with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, (D-N.Y.) threatening to hold him in contempt of Congress.  Adam Schiff Calls For Barr’s Resignation, Labels Him ‘Unfit’ And ‘The Second Most Dangerous Man In The Country’

The Notre Dame Cathedral Fire has highlighted the attempts of the powerful to control the news.  The Paris prosecutor, Rémy Heitz, has decided the fire was “likely an accident, not arson.”  When reporting his decision, it is easy to eliminate the word “likely” for the sake of brevity.  Luke Baker, Reuters’s Paris bureau chief, tweeted, “Fire at Paris’ Notre Dame cathedral was started by accident and is related to ongoing work, according to France 2, citing police.”  There it is: the orthodox truth.  If you don’t accept the “orthodox” story, you are a “conspiracy theorist,” an Islamophobe, and a racist.

Deviance from the orthodox view must be silenced.  Fox News’s Shepard Smith invited the French media analyst Philippe Karsenty for an eyewitness interview while the fire was still raging.  Karsenty said, “Of course you will hear the political correctness, that it’s probably an accident, but…”  Before he could finish, Smith interrupted: “Sir, sir, sir, we’re not going to speculate here of the cause of something that we don’t know.”  Karsenty continued: “I’m just telling you, you need to be ready…”  Smith cut him off: “No, sir.  We’re not doing that here.  Not now.  Not on my watch!  Philippe Karsenty, it’s very good of you to be here.”

Fox’s Neil Cavuto had a similar experience in his interview with William Donohue, president of the Catholic League.  Donohue was skeptical about the accident claim.  He commented, “Forgive me for being suspicious.  Just last month, a 17th-century church was set on fire in Paris.  We’ve seen tabernacles knocked down, crosses have been torn down, statues.”  Cavuto responded, “We don’t know that.  So if we can avoid what your suspicions might be.”  Dohohue then stated, “When I find out that the Eucharist is being destroyed and excrement is being smeared on crosses…”  At that point, Cavuto decided to terminate the interview: “Wait a minute.  I love you, Bill, but we cannot make conjectures about this.  So, thank you.  Bill, I’m sorry.  Thanks very much.  I do want to let people know, and again we’re not trying to be rude to our guests here.”

In a bizarre story recently, two U.S. Army soldiers encountered Mexican military personnel along the U.S. southern border.  According to an incident report obtained by Newsweek, Mexican troops crossed the border and moved “tactically fast” toward the U.S. troops’ position before ordering them out of their vehicle at gunpoint. A Mexican soldier then relieved a U.S. soldier of his pistol during the exchange.  Media reports emphasized confusion over the actual border locations, but this misses the bigger issue: Mexican military forces violated U.S. sovereignty and demonstrated hostile intent by maneuvering armed and uncontested on U.S. military personnel.  If ever there were a time for the U.S military to get “a little rough” at the border, this would have been it.

With roughly 3,000 active duty military personnel deployed to a border at its breaking point, interactions such as this likely will increase.  The legal ports of entry are over capacity; more migrants will, in desperation, seek unlawful entryinto the United States. Now that we know U.S. military personnel are patrolling remote areas of the border, it is only a matter of time before the next interaction turns to conflict.  Despite a “no contact with migrants” policy for border troops, the military is expanding its role.  Given the growing probability of troop interactions, what are the standing rules for the use of force for military personnel at the border? To answer that question, we must first know what the military’s mission is.
