Historic Flooding in Midwest, The Mueller Report Showdown, Massive Solar Storm Evidence, Russia Deploys Missiles In Venezuela, War Over Golan Heights  

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s “spring outlook” issued Thursday came with dire warnings, even as flooding was already tormenting states including Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri.  “More than 200 million people are at risk of flooding in their communities,” Ed Clark, director of NOAA’s National Water Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, said in a statement.

Late winter’s deadly flooding could turn into catastrophic spring flooding in the Midwest and beyond, forecasters said.  Heavy rain supplemented by rapid snow melt has widened rivers and put farms underwater.  But Mary C. Erickson, deputy director of National Weather Service, on Thursday warned that the trouble may just be beginning.  “The major flooding we’ve already experienced across the lower Missouri [River region] and the lower to middle Mississippi [River] valley is a preview to what we expect the rest of the spring,” she said. “In fact, we expect the flooding will get worse and become more widespread.”

The outlook states that spring, which this year concludes on June 20, could bring major or moderate flooding in 25 states, with at least two-thirds of the continental United States expected to see an “elevated” flood risk and above-average precipitation.

Solar storms can be far more powerful than previously thought.  A new study has found evidence for the third known case of a massive solar storm in historical times. The researchers believe that society might not be sufficiently prepared if a similar event were to happen now.  The Earth is constantly being bombarded by cosmic particles; however, the stream of particles is particularly strong when a solar storm sweeps past.  Solar storms are made up of high-energy particles unleashed from the sun by explosions on the star’s surface.

For the past 70 years, researchers have studied these solar storms by direct instrumental observations, which has led to an understanding that they can pose a risk to the electrical grid, communication systems, satellites, and air traffic.  Two examples of severe solar storms in modern times that caused extensive power outages took place in Quebec, Canada, in 1989 and Malmö, Sweden in 2003.

Following the major weekend development of Moscow unambiguously asserting its ‘red line’ concerning potential US military intervention in Venezuela, for which Russia sent a military transport plane filled with Russian troops which landed in Caracas Saturday, new satellite images reveal a major deployment of S-300 air defense missile systems to a key airbase south of Caracas.  Crucially the Russian AN-124 transport plane which touched down in Caracas on Saturday carried no less than Russian General Vasily Tonkoshkurov, identified as chief of the Main Staff of the Ground Forces and First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces of Russia, accompanied by 99 servicemen and 35 tons of cargo.

Middle East War – This week is the eighth anniversary of the beginning of the civil war in Syria, and after the nightmare that the people of Syria have been through, you would think that the Assad regime would be eager for peace.  But instead, Assad appears to be ready to go for broke.  If Syria can spark a Middle East war that results in the complete destruction of Israel, Assad would be remembered as a hero in the Islamic world forever.  Instead of a legacy of civil war and crushing poverty, Assad’s legacy would be one of wartime leader that brought total victory over Syria’s most hated enemy.
